New on the blog

Designers, what is the one tool you can’t live without?

Almost everyone has their own style, taste and preferences when it comes to the tools that they’re comfortable using. This, it seems, is especially true when it comes to designers.

Most of us are creatures of habit — myself especially — trusting only what we’ve experienced, whether it’s our process, inspiration, workflow or even how we use the tools we choose. It’s hard to tell what ties me to using the methods and tools I do use more, familiarity or outside influence.

Post reboot thoughts

Now that the CSS Reboot has come and gone by almost a full week, I would say it’s a good time to take inventory of what happened and how it may or may not have affected me.

Colours

To be honest, I’m not completely surprised by the overwhelming amount of websites using dark colours and sticking with an overly grey palette. There were a few high profile sites that used that colour scheme.

Screenflicker rebooted

Ah, the time has finally come to unleash the latest version of Screenflicker Developments, just in time for the May 1st CSS Reboot. Of course, when I say just in time that’s what I mean. This new design has been a work in progress since the middle of March but stayed in a state of flux for over a month. Client work does take priority remember. Missing the May 1st deadline wasn’t an option though so this weekend was filled with the joys of coding.

Design direction

As much as I appreciate the current trends of light on dark, it’s not a direction I wanted Screenflicker to go in. Grays, light blues and greens are all fantastic colours but I wanted to take a different approach. The muted greens and browns from the previous design served as a base for this colour scheme, it just needed a little punching up.

Chief Web Officer position needed

Chris, over at Brain Fuel, has an interesting post about Chief Web Officers. There is a bit more of a story in Chris’ post and that lends to the legitimacy of the actual thought.

In the end he suggests that there should be a Chief Web Officer position that reports to the CEO of the company. This CWO would have to be someone that actually understands the web, understands the direction the technology is going in and isn’t afraid of the CEO. They would have to stand up for themselves and be able to tell the CEO what will work and what won’t work.

My take on visual noise on blogs

Over at web-graphics.com Andreas writes about his distaste for the new visual clutter/noise on the majority of blogs lately. Although I can see his point of view, I wrote a little rebuttal over at theubergeeks.net

Link is fixed now. Apologies for the bad link earlier.
