Why does time always fly when you’re working? I suppose it’s a good thing since everyone hates to be working hard and when they see the clock it’s only been 5 minutes. Unfortunately, when you’re working hard on client projects and the time fly’s that leaves very little time for the personal projects.
Of course, the personal project I’m referring to is the impending redesign of Screenflicker Developments. The progress has been slow up until this point but considering it’s April now I’ve got to start making the push — especially if I want to get half the things I’ve been thinking of doing done.

There is a lot of chatter going around about bringing current best practices of web development and design to the masses. I’ve voiced my opinions on the majority of web firms and I’m not the only one that thinks that way.
Unfortunately for those of us promoting standards and best practices we are running up against a lot of friction. Not only from stalwart designers and developers still using their own prehistoric methods but also from our quote-unqote governing bodies and the education sector. In particular I find it the most disturbing that, of all people, our educators and educational institutions are so resistant to updating their knowledge and practices.

Web developers here in Calgary are stuck in the stone age. Visit any website for any business in Calgary or one that was built by a developer here it’s almost a guarantee that the site will not be accessible, semantic or even remotely close to employing even the most basic technique of web standards.
Why does it take so long for people to change? What does the local web community have to fear? Why do they feel that learning new techniques is such a bad thing?

I decided to take the plunge. What plunge? The CSS Reboot plunge that’s what. Matt Brett posted about his experience with the last reboot and is contemplating participating again. His post started me along the path that led to my decision.
Screenflicker Developments has only been around for a few years. During that time screenflicker.com has gone through a few minor changes here and there but stuck with the same design scheme/theme and structure. Ask any designer and they’ll tell you that a lot of the time after a few short months they grow tired of the same design. So the fact that this particular design has lasted as long as it did is either a testament to my love of the colour scheme or my lack of time to change it.

How do you find the right web designer or developer? That is easily one of the most difficult questions to answer, especially if you work in either profession.
This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive, step-by-step way to hire the right web professional for everyone that is looking. What this is meant to be is a set of guidelines for you to follow to help you determine which firms or consultants are professional, reputable web professionals.
